History of the Citizenship Award
In
1996 as the result of an approach from the
then Principal of the Coley Street School,
the Trustees of the Foxton RSA Trust Board
decided, that in accordance with the Trust
Deed, it was appropriate that the Trust
offered an annual Citizenship Award to a
year 8 student at each of the five Primary
Schools in the Foxton district and township.
Selecting the recipients each year became
the responsibility of each individual
school. The award consists of a Certificate,
which is awarded to the annual recipient at
each school, plus a cash grant. The money
is provided to assist with the expenses
needed to commence a college education.
Sometime shortly after 2000, (the early
records were destroyed in the fire of 2006),
the Trust approached the Manawatu College
and offered an annual scholarship that could
be awarded to a student in the last year of
College education, who is about to enter
university or some other like institution to
further his/her tertiary education. The
successful student is selected by the
College each year.
The
Scholarship consists of a Certificate plus a
cash grant given to the recipient of the
award, the money to be used to assist with
expenses needed to further the student’s
future study.
A
Trustee of the Trust or an RSA member is
invited each year by the Trust to represent
the Trust at the annual prize giving
ceremony of the college and of each primary
school.
